SOMERSET -- It was a bit cold Saturday in Somerset, but it was perfect weather for the 22nd annual Fire and Ice Festival.

The festival, which started Friday, has had more than a thousand people attend so far.

Organizers said they passed out 1,300 pins for the event.

There were more than 35 ice sculptures, and lots of activities and food for the family.

"I've been coming here for a long time, and I like coming here because I like to see all the neat sculptures, and they have really good kettle corn here too," volunteer Alexa Thacker said.

Thacker, a ninth-grader at Somerset High School, is volunteering with the Interact Club, along with her friend Erin. They took pictures with kids, dressed up as Anna and Elsa from the animated movie "Frozen."

Dave Fiola, who runs the social media for the festival, said it's a huge volunteer effort to make sure everything runs smoothly.

"It brings a ton of people,” Fiola said. “I've been seeing people chime in on our Facebook page from Maryland, coming in just for the festival. This will be their third year. I was talking to them earlier this morning, so it's pretty cool."

"It's cold out, but it's a nice day, and it's fun to be out here with your family and friends," Lydia Sorchilla said.

This year's theme is "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Ice sculptor Dan Shaffer was carving a flying monkey out of three, 300-pound blocks of ice.

"Mastro Ice has been coming back for a few years,” Shaffer said. “This might be our 10th year and I see a lot of familiar faces in the town."

Organizers said it's a big boost for the community and a lot of local businesses are involved as well.

If you didn't get a chance to enjoy the food and festivities yet, the festival continues through Sunday afternoon.
