A December reward for students happened today in the Westmont Hilltop School District.

The administration awarded all students with no disciplinary referrals, failing grades and unexcused absences the opportunity to go ice skating at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial.

Superintendent Thomas Mitchell said it was a great external motivator for the students to blow off a little bit of steam before Christmas break.

“Really, it’s been awesome that the War Memorial was able to partner with us and give us a really good deal on the ice time and work with us on the rentals. A lot of these kids have never skated before, so it’s an opportunity for the kids who can skate; they’re involved with hockey or figure skating, it’s an opportunity to just take their friends out on the ice and show them what they can do and help them out,” Mitchell said.

It was a school-wide field trip with 500 students taken in separate groups.

Students had one reward earlier this year and officials hope to hold more events later this school year.
