PITTSBURGH - Officials say a major bridge into downtown Pittsburgh is closed after a fire that began on a construction tarp.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said the Liberty Bridge is closed indefinitely while state transportation inspectors examine the damage from a Friday afternoon blaze.

Crews are conducting an $80 million reconstruction project on the bridge.

A Transportation Department spokesman tells the paper the fire started in a tarp being used to control painting work and spread to nearby plastic pipes.

Workers had been cutting steel in the area.
