Federal authorities say the man who pleaded guilty to fatally striking a fellow Penn State student with his car is no longer in the United States after being granted what is termed "voluntary departure."

Ahmed Alqubaisi was charged last September after police say he reportedly lost control of his vehicle and struck 25-year-old Lovisa Arnesson-Cronhamre, who was jogging along Park Avenue, near Penn State’s campus.

While awaiting a bail hearing in Centre County court, Alqubaisi was reportedly taken into custody by federal authorities.

On March 15th, Alqubaisi returned to a Centre County court where he pleaded guilty a charge of accidents involving death or injury.

He was then sentenced to serve 33 days-to-23-and-a-half-months in prison, followed by five years of probation, but was reportedly given credit for time served and was released back into federal custody.

According to a spokesperson with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, on March 18th, a federal judge granted Alqubaisi "voluntary departure" from the United States.

Authorities say voluntary departure allows an individual to avoid deportation if they leave the country within a specific/provided timeframe.

It also allows the individual to "lawfully" return to the United States in the future.

An ICE spokesperson confirmed that Alqubaisi left the county, on his own expense, on March 22nd.
