Downtown Pittsburgh bridge closed indefinitely after fire

PITTSBURGH - Officials say a major bridge into downtown Pittsburgh is closed after a fire that began on a construction tarp. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said the Liberty Bridge is closed indefinitely while state transportation inspectors examine the damage from a Friday afternoon blaze. Crews are conducting an $80 million reconstruction project on the bridge. A Transportation Department spokesman tells the paper the fire started in a tarp being used to control painting work and spread to nearby plastic pipes.

Supply of some Easter candy low

Some candy store owners said stocking the shelves has been a challenge this Easter season. The supply chain for candy has been up and down recently according to the owner of Blaine Boring Chocolates in Johnstown, but there are a few items that have been more difficult to get. Blaine Boring’s owner said white chocolate has been especially fluctuating. The owner of Blaine Boring says gummy candy has been one of the more difficult to attain, but more than anything else jellybeans have been difficult to get a hold of this easter season.

Man guilty of rape in case using DNA from 1995

Bellefonte, PA (WJAC) — A Mifflin County man was convicted Thursday by a Centre County judge for the 1995 rape of a Penn State student. Scott Williams was found guilty of rape by forcible compulsion and aggravated assault by Judge Brian Marshall. Prosecutors tell 6 News' Gary Sinderson the action was a stipulated bench trial where the defense agreed to the two charges presented to the judge. The judge approved a bench trial, a non-jury trial, for Williams in December.

Teen, 17, killed in Philadelphia, 3rd teen slain in 3 days

PHILADELPHIA, Pa (AP) — Police say another teenager has been shot and killed in Philadelphia, the third teen in two days. Police said the 17-year-old youth was shot in the chest near a recreation center in the Kingsessing neighborhood of southwest Philadelphia at about 8 p.m. Friday. The shooting occurred almost exactly 24 hours after 16-year-old Kahree Simmons was shot and killed at a west Philadelphia recreation center. A 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy sustained graze wounds.

Report shows impacts of Biden's college debt forgiveness plan in Pa. amid calls for repeal

(WJAC) — A new report out this week said nearly two million Pennsylvanians would get a total of nearly $22 billion in college debt relief from President Joe Biden’s plan to provide loan forgiveness. "Jobs are increasingly requiring higher education, yet we continue to underfund higher education, and students really are strapped down with incredible amounts of debt," said Diana Polson, Senior Research Analyst for Keystone Research Center and the PA Budget and Policy Center.

Houtzdale Fire Company gets a new ride from DCNR

HOUTZDALE - A fire company in Clearfield County recently got a new ride. Houtzdale Fire Company Captain Ted McCulley said the company received a 1986 Chevy pickup from DCNR Forestry two months ago. The pickup was named "The Stump Jumper." It was refurbished by members of the fire company. "It will be mainly used for brush fires, but it can be used if we need some extra man power," McCulley said.

PIAA soccer and volleyball state playoff results:

JOHNSTOWN, PA (WJAC) - Tuesday held the first round of the PIAA playoffs for both high school soccer and volleyball. The Bedford boys defeated Beaver Area 5-0 to advance in Class 2A. Sophomore Dominic Albus said the Bison's offense "came in like a freight train" in the second half after Bedford extended there one-nil lead to five-nil. Over twenty area teams competed in the state tournament. The results are listed below.

Then, when you might have gone out to look, you found nothing to explain the booms and vibrations. Well, it’s a winter phenomenon called frost quakes which are happening all over the region. When asked, some residents knew what a frost quake was, while others laughed and thought it was a joke.

Man found guilty of beating girlfriend's son to death while she watched

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (WOAI/KABB) — A jury has convicted a man accused of beating his girlfriend's 5-year-old son to death and dumping his body in the river. Daniel Garcia was on trial for the 2021 murder of 5-year-old Domenic Aguilar Acevedo. Police say Domenic was at an extended stay near Fort Sam Houston when he was beaten to death. The boy's mom and her boyfriend were accused of trying to cover up what happened by tossing his body in the Colorado River.

DuBois write-in candidates appear to unseat incumbents, updated results show

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — It appears write-in candidates in DuBois did something that rarely happens: beat the candidates already on the ballot. The elections office has released the unofficial results of the May 16 primary elections. And it is turning out to be a big win for write-in candidates. Douglas Braff spoke with the county elections director and one of the write-in candidates about the results. Dawn Graham, the director of elections and voter registration in Clearfield County, tells 6 News that while the results are unofficial, she expects little to no changes in the vote count by June 5.
