Veterans' groups eager to see cannabis reclassified, hope move expands care options
(TND) — Veterans' groups are applauding news that the federal government might reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.
AMVETS National Executive Director Joe Chenelly said Wednesday that such a move would be an “important step forward.”
And Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America CEO Allison Jaslow said greater access to cannabis could be a “game-changer” for veterans’ health care.
The Drug Enforcement Administration will reportedly move to reclassify marijuana, or cannabis, as a Schedule III substance.
Altoona man found guilty of first-degree murder for 2018 shooting
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — A man who investigators say confessed to the 2018 killing of a man during a botched drug deal in Altoona has been found guilty of first-degree murder.
The verdict was reached Friday in a Blair County courtroom.
Investigators say John Stiver II shot and killed 58-year-old David Hoover in a church parking lot at the corner of 4th Ave. and Second Street July 26, 2018.
At the time police said witness accounts and surveillance video led them to Stiver who was found in a tent in the woods behind his father’s home.
Utah woman accused of manslaughter after woman fatally overdoses on fentanyl
CEDAR CITY, Utah (KUTV) — A woman was charged with felony manslaughter after police said she admitted to delivering fentanyl to a woman who died of an overdose shortly after.
Officials arrived at a hotel room in Cedar City, where they said the woman was found with Narcan beside her along with what appeared to be blue fentanyl pills and evidence that it had been smoked.
First responders said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Protect child or try to save victim
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- As Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 plunged, passenger Hollie Mackey was torn between trying to save a woman whose upper body was being sucked out of a broken window and protecting the child beside her from a similar fate.
When one of the plane's engines blew Tuesday, so did the window beside Jennifer Riordan, a bank executive from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Mackey says a young girl was sitting between her and Riordan and they tried but failed to help Riordan.
PennDOT to resume issuing REAL IDs at Driver License Centers across Pennsylvania
Harrisburg, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today that it has resumed issuing REAL IDs at reopened Driver License Centers that offer driver license services throughout the state. PennDOT previously paused the issuing of REAL IDs throughout the state in March out of an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Albert Ruddy, Oscar-winning producer of 'The Godfather,' dies at 94
NEW YORK (AP) — Albert S. Ruddy, a colorful, Canadian-born producer and writer who won Oscars for "The Godfather" and "Million Dollar Baby," developed the raucous prison-sports comedy "The Longest Yard" and helped create the hit sitcom "Hogan's Heroes," has died at age 94.
Ruddy died “peacefully” Saturday at the UCLA Medical Center, according to a spokesperson, who added that among his final words were, “The game is over, but we won the game.

Students there have been finishing up exams and classes this week and they said it’s been extremely challenging. Nikki Haley suggests changing the retirement age
COUNCIL BLUFFS. Iowa (TND) — Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, now a Republican presidential candidate, suggested changing the retirement age and other entitlement reformations during a recent town hall in Iowa.
Social Security and Medicare benefits, and the retirement age necessary to receive those benefits, have been controversial political topics as the U.S. heads toward the 2024 presidential election.
President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump both apparently support the programs.
St. Francis comes up short in NEC championship game
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Robert Morris used a second half surge to defeat league-rival Saint Francis, 77-67, Tuesday night in the Northeast Conference tournament championship.
With the victory, the Colonials have qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015.

Nursing and Personal care homes reach "critical" point amid more closures
Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Finding personal care for a loved one can be hard enough. That process became increasingly more difficult following the Covid-19 Pandemic. The Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association says more than 230 personal care homes have closed across the state since the pandemic began.
M. Veil Griffith, an administrator with the Cambria County Area Agency on Aging says, "It boils down to a financial problem."
The Atrium, a personal care home in Johnstown, is one of the most recent facilities to announce it's closing its doors.
