Remembering the Quecreek Mine rescue 16 years later
SOMERSET, Pa. (WJAC) -- It's often called "the miracle at Quecreek.” Sixteen years ago today, nine miners were rescued from the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County after being trapped for four days.
The men were trapped in a flooded mine. And despite a lot of setbacks and difficulties, a nationwide effort helped free all nine miners.

Nyko's on Scalp Avenue in Johnstown has decided to make a few changes to get through this tough time. This comes after Gov. Tom Wolf announced the closure of all sit-down restaurants because of COVID-19 concerns.

PA man killed after hitting trooper, striking SUV
PLAINS, Pa. (AP) — State police shot and killed a man who struck a trooper with his pickup truck and then crashed into a police sport utility vehicle after an altercation at a northeastern Pennsylvania bar, authorities said.
State police and Luzerne County prosecutors said troopers from Wilkes-Barre were called to the Ole Tyme Charley’s Pub and Grill in Plains Township at about 1:30 a.m. Friday after a “highly intoxicated” man was reported to have assaulted a patron and an employee.
Bear meat kebabs send family to hospital with rare parasite infection
Sharing is caring but one family will probably rethink that motto after their black bear kebabs sent multiple people to the hospital with a rare parasite. In a newly released report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, six family members were infected with trichinellosis which spreads through eating infected meat. An investigation began in 2022 when a suspected case was reported to the Minnesota Department of Health.
According to the CDC, a 29-year-old man was hospitalized for fever, severe myalgias, periorbital edema, eosinophilia, and other laboratory abnormalities.
'I hope it was an accident:' First responder testifies at hearing for Clearfield Co. teen
CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — A 14-year-old boy who is accused of shooting and killing a 12-year-old girl late last month made an appearance in Clearfield County court on Friday.
Aaron Klingensmith allegedly told state troopers that he pointed a gun at the girl and shot her on April 28th.
Klingensmith also allegedly told investigators that he has an understanding of guns and gun safety.
Authorities say he allegedly retrieved the gun from the top of a gun safe in the living room of a Brady Township home, along Bearfield Road.

KYIV, Ukraine (TND) — Secretary of State Antony Blinken performed a rendition of “Rockin’ in the Free World” at a bar in Kyiv Tuesday, drawing him criticism as the Russia-Ukraine war continues.
Blinken played guitar and sang the song with a local band after visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Bohdan Yaremenko, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, argued that the time the U.S. took to approve military aid for Ukraine cost lives and encouraged Russia.
