Investigation underway after 26 barges break loose on Ohio River

Authorities say an investigation is underway after 26 barges broke loose on the Ohio River Friday night. Officials say it happened just before 11:30 p.m., and involved barges owned or operated by Campbell Transportation Company. Police say 23 of the barges were loaded with dry cargo, and none of the 26 contained hazardous materials. So far, no injuries have been reported, but a marina sustained extensive damage. Of the barges that broke loose, 11 are pinned against the bank by Brunot Island and are being held by a tugboat.

Penn State University police officers now equipped with body cams

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa (WJAC) — According to a university release, all Penn State police officers will now be equipped with body cams, beginning Monday, May 17th. Officials say this decision allows Penn State police to be more transparent and accountable, and also helps support safety for both the officers and the community. “This important step builds on our ongoing efforts to cultivate a more trusting relationship with community members,” said Charlie Noffsinger, associate vice president for Penn State University Police and Public Safety (UPPS).

Dam repairs, upgrades underway at Raystown Lake

Huntingdon Co., PA (WJAC) — In Huntingdon County, underwater and surface work on portions of Raystown Dam's water release mechanisms began Monday. The equipment being repaired controls how much water is sent downstream to prevent flooding of homes and businesses around the lake. The area of the lake downstream from mile marker 1 is now closed to all boat traffic to allow for the repairs. The closure is expected to be in place through the end of October.

Extra $600 weekly federal benefits ending this week

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — The state's labor and industry secretary says more than $28 billion have been paid in benefits since March 15. Jerry Oleksiak says 92 percent of people who were eligible and filed for benefits between March 15 and June 20 received their payments as of Monday. Pennsylvania dentist accused of assaulting patient, prosecutors say

TREDYFFRIN TOWNSHIP, P.A. (TND) — A 56-year-old dentist in Pennsylvania was accused of assaulting one of his patients, according to prosecutors. The Chester County District Attorney’s Office, along with police, said James Godorecci was arrested and charged with indecent assault and harassment. In a news release, prosecutors said Godorecci allegedly assaulted someone on Jan. 3 while he working as a dentist at Main Line Dental Aesthetics in Tredyffrin Township. Orphans get a gravestone, more than 100 years after deaths

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — More than a century after their deaths, a group of orphans buried in a Pennsylvania cemetery are being recognized. A children's behavioral care facility in Wilkes-Barre (wilks BAYR'-ree) had been collecting donations to get a gravestone for the 19 children buried in the Hollenback Cemetery. On Thursday, the Children's Service Center hosted a dedication of the gravestone. In the past, the center was known as the Home for Friendless Children.
