Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Our coverage on tractor pulling safety continues as we spoke with a driver and saw how they make sure it’s as safe as possible.
We were able to see everything from the protective equipment that the drivers wear, to the different parts of the tractor.
We also learned about what guidelines are in place for these events.
Tractor pulling is going on at many of the fairs in the commonwealth and with big machines comes big risks, but local puller Steve Mundrick says it’s safer than a lot of other competitions.
Nursing facility fires 3 workers charged with abusing patients
BROOKVILLE - Three people are facing charges in Jefferson County after they were accused of abusing elderly patients at a nursing facility.
Haley Shirey, 20, of Strattenville, and Hannah Shirey, 20, of Strattenville, are facing multiple charges including strangulation, neglect of a care-dependent person, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and harassment.
Rebekah Call, 20, of Strattenville, is facing conspiracy to commit those charges.
According to court documents, police said a caregiver in training reported abuse toward two residents at Laurelbrooke Landing in Brookville.
Inmate, guard charged in stabbing death in prison cell
DALLAS, Pa. (AP) — A prison inmate has been charged with criminal homicide and a prison guard with involuntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of another inmate at a northeastern Pennsylvania prison earlier this year. Twenty-five-year-old inmate Nafese Pierce is charged with criminal homicide in the death of 24-year-old fellow inmate Edgar Gearhart, who was stabbed Jan. 28 in his cell at the State Correctional Institution-Dallas. Twenty-five-year-old corrections officer Osmel Martinez of Kingston is charged with involuntary manslaughter, obstruction of justice and unknown falsification to authorities, accused of allowing the crime and then ignoring concerns from other inmates about the victim's injuries.
Congress pushes for return of detained Somerset man in Turks and Caicos
Bryan Hagerich of Somerset County is still detained in Turks and Caicos after 99 days.
Members of Congress are fighting for his return.
Senator John Fetterman says he’s feeling extremely optimistic after meeting with officials from Turks and Caicos this week. Meanwhile, friends of the Hagerich family say they’re nervously awaiting the sentencing.
Bryan Hagerich of Somerset County was arrested in Turks and Caicos back in February after hunting bullets were found in his bag that he said he didn't know were there.
Prosecutors charge 5 men accused of impersonating police officers to kidnap and kill a man
PHILADELPHIA (WKRC) — Five men accused of impersonating police officers to kidnap and kill a 28-year-old man were charged on Thursday.
They kidnapped and killed the man in 2006. The group posed as police officers using fake badges, police lights and firearms, according to the indictment filed in the U.S. District Court in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Shamari Taylor and his 21-year-old girlfriend were kidnapped because they wanted his cocaine and drug money,according to CBS News.
Central Cambria Middle School receives grant to support STEM program
EBENSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — A Cambria County Middle School received a significant grant today.
Competitive Power Ventures donated the money to support Central Cambria Middle School's STEM programs.
Central Cambria eighth graders are getting a chance to learn through hands-on projects about engineering and sustainable energy.
CPV donated the $20,000 to fund a new program created by a nonprofit, Project Lead the Way.
The program focuses on creating opportunities for students to learn about science, engineering and math.
Pennsylvania to ban cell phone use while driving in effort to reduce distracted driving
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania will join the majority of states that ban motorists from handling a cell phone for almost any purpose while driving, as backers of the legislation hope to reduce distracted driving accidents and deaths after nearly two decades of pressing the measure.
Gov. Josh Shapiro's office said Thursday that the Democrat will sign the bill, 18 years after he first introduced a similar bill when he served in the state House of Representatives.

What led to fatal shooting of CO at Blair County court building? Docs provide new details
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — A criminal complaint is providing more details about what led to a shooting Wednesday at the Central Court building in Altoona that claimed the life of a corrections officer.
Authorities were called to the court facility, located at 615 4th Street, just after 3 p.m. for reports of shots fired and an officer down.
Crews responded to find that 47-year-old Rhonda Russell had been shot in the holding area.
