MARTINSBURG -- The Central baseball team won its first-ever state championship in the PIAA AAA Finals last week, beating Holy Redeemer 8-3, an accomplishment that won't be easily forgotten by not only the school but the community.

"It's awesome getting the first championship in our school's history and leaving something for the younger kids to live up to," senior infielder Alex Hoenstine said.

"We all saw it firsthand when we came home, it was pouring down rain and the entire community was out there waiting for us," senior outfielder Chase Smith said.

This was an expectation the team had well before its players began high school, but beyond the expectations, it's the legacy of who this team was that will remain in head coach A.J. Hoenstine's memory.

"We had a lot of outstanding players and athletes that they weren't too good to do anything for the team," A.J. Hoenstine said.

And the first state champions in Central history will not soon be forgotten.

"These guys will definitely be remembered as leaving everything they had on the field and playing the game the right way," Hoenstine said. "They'll go down in history."
