The pandemic has cancelled prom for many high schoolers the past couple of years.

But with prom (most likely) coming back in full swing this year, it's time for many girls to find a prom dress.

That can be an expensive task.

The Johnstown Cinderella Project is making that possible for all girls regardless of their income level.

"Prom is the one thing we all think back on. We can remember prom as being a big deal. It's in all the movies and all the TV shows as the big thing," said Coordinator Sherri Rae.

The Johnstown Cinderella Project gives free prom dresses, shoes, and accessories to high school girls across the Greater Johnstown region.

Their first "prom dress try-on" was held Saturday afternoon at the YWCA in Johnstown.

Organizers say about 1,000 dresses were donated this year.

"We ask that they're recent, modern, and up-to-date prom dresses. We're trying to keep our stock up to date for the girls, and make them feel like they're getting something that their fellow classmates are going to be wearing," Rae told 6 News.

Founded 16 years ago, the Johnstown Cinderella Project didn't have their annual "prom dress try-on" in 2020 due to the pandemic.

They had a modified version of the project last year.

But this year, organizers say it's back to normal, giving more girls their 'Cinderella' moment.

"That's why all our volunteers keep coming back year after year, because we're excited to see that look on their face when they find the right dress," Rae says.

Their final try-on date will be held at the YWCA on Saturday, March 26th from 12:00 to 3:00.
