A man who investigators say confessed to the 2018 killing of a man during a botched drug deal in Altoona has been found guilty of first-degree murder.

The verdict was reached Friday in a Blair County courtroom.

Investigators say John Stiver II shot and killed 58-year-old David Hoover in a church parking lot at the corner of 4th Ave. and Second Street July 26, 2018.

At the time police said witness accounts and surveillance video led them to Stiver who was found in a tent in the woods behind his father’s home.

Police said Stiver admitted to the shooting, but said it was in self defense because Hoover had come after him with a baseball bat after Stiver had driven off with his money during a drug deal.

Stiver was found guilty of first-degree murder, third-degree murder, aggravated assault and other related charges.
