Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — On this week’s episode of Road Trippin’, we explore the story of the Lemon House, located at the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in Cambria County.
Samuel and Jean Lemon moved to the area in 1826 and built a log tavern for those traveling in Conestoga wagons moving west.
After learning that a railroad would be built nearby, the family decided to construct a sandstone building, which would serve as a tavern and living area.
While digging a water well in the 1830’s, they came upon a large seam of coal.
That led to them beginning a coal mining operation and becoming one of central Pennsylvania’s "wealthiest families."
Park officials remind the public that there is no parking at the Lemon House.
Visitors must park at the Allegheny Portage Railroad visitor center and walk a short distance.
The first floor is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The site’s address is 110 Federal Park Road in Gallitzin.
