CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Investigators say a woman who was found stabbed to death in Geistown Tuesday was killed by a man whom she met on Facebook Marketplace to buy a fridge for her boyfriend.

Authorities say 26-year-old Joshua Gorgone was arrested Tuesday and has been charged with criminal homicide in the slaying of 54-year-old Denise Williams.

Officials held a press conference Wednesday morning, where they provided more details related to the case.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees was joined by District Attorney Greg Neugebauer and Geistown Borough Police Chief Nicholas Zakucia.

Investigators said Williams was found Tuesday with multiple stab wounds in Gorgone’s apartment located at 206 Old Scalp Ave. after her family reported her missing Monday evening.

They said they were able to find Williams by tracking her phone and by receiving crucial information from a Facebook account that was provided by Williams’ family.

Lees said an autopsy was performed Tuesday, which confirmed that Williams had died from massive blood loss caused by the stab wounds.

Lees said the autopsy also revealed defensive wounds indicating there was a struggle before she was killed.

“She did put up one heck of a fight,” Lees said. “This was a violent death that she sustained.”

At this point, investigators believe that Williams went to Gorgone’s apartment to look at a refrigerator that she found on Facebook marketplace, according to Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer.

Neugebauer said Williams’ family told investigators that Williams was looking to buy the fridge for her boyfriend as a present.

“She went there to look at the fridge and never came out, unfortunately” Neugebauer said.

Investigators say they do not believe Williams and Gorgone knew each other, and they’re now providing a warning to the public regarding meeting in person to make purchases.

“Use caution when you’re dealing with anybody or anything involving purchasing something through then internet, meeting up with someone,” Neugebauer said. “Don’t go alone. Don’t invite someone to your house alone to look at something. Always have someone with you or if possible, meet in a public or well-lit place.”

Chief Zakucia said that the Geistown community is safe, but the brutal slaying of Williams has left the community shocked.

“When you lose someone like this or have incidents of this nature, it’s a shock to us all. The residents of Geistown are safe,” Zakucia said. “This was unfortunate; it was a tough scene. It was a tough call for myself and my officers.

Zakucia reiterated the importance of using caution when meeting up with strangers who’ve been met on the internet, to avoid something like this happening again.

“To kind of expand on purchasing things online and meeting someone at someone’s house,” Zakucia said. “It’s never a good idea. Public place. Meet with more than one person. You never know what you’re going to walk into.”

Gorgone was interviewed by Cambria County Detectives Tuesday during which time he admitted to stabbing Williams with a kitchen knife following an argument over the cost of the refrigerator, according to charging documents.

Gorgone is being held at the Cambria County Prison and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 14.

He was denied bail.
