DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — The Middletown Area School District has canceled its 2022 football season.
In a letter from the Superintendent on August 24, 2022, they say a video shows more involvement from students in hazing than originally thought.
The letter from the superintendent said the district has obtained video of a separate hazing incident within the football team. Dr. Chelton Hunter said the incident took place inside the heat acclimation room.

He said the video has been shared with law enforcement, and they will continue to work on the investigation. Any student found to be involved will face disciplinary action, the letter continues to say any staff who were found to ignore the hazing will also face disciplinary action.
The Superintendent reiterated that this will not be tolerated. Dr. Hunter wrote,
The kind of hazing that occurred in our facilities with this team is reprehensible. It simply cannot and will not be tolerated. We know we must work to address the culture of this team, educate our student body about hazing, and put programs in place to help us ensure that this kind of atmosphere is never allowed to exist in our school facilities.The administration is working to plan other opportunities for the cheerleading team and marching band as this cancelation will also impact their season.

Middletown was supposed to play against Lower Dauphin High School on Friday. In a statement the Lower Dauphin School District said it was unsuccessful in attempts to find a last minute opponent for Friday night, so officials said the team will seek another opponent for the end of the season.
