Authorities with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have released a preliminary report regarding last month's fatal plane crash that claimed the life of a Johnstown businessman.
Investigators say on the evening of Dec. 29, John Burley departed from Erie International Airport/Tom Ridge Field en route for the John Murtha Johnstown/Cambria County Airport.
Officials say at the time of the crash, the plane was traveling at an eastern then southeastern direction.
Authorities noted that Burley was flying under "visual flight rules" and was not in communication with air traffic control.
According to the report, investigators say the crash reportedly occurred as Burley was attempting to make a left turn at approximately 1,300 feet above ground level.
Officials say the plane crashed into a large wooded area, located within the Allegheny National Forest, in Marienville.
Investigators noted that the plane was severely damaged in the crash, losing both if its wings and its landing gear.
Authorities also noted that the plane was not equipped with any instrument rating and was unable to properly record weather conditions.
