As part of a new five-year contract between the city and Sargent's Group, the Point Stadium will soon have a new alliterative name: "Sargent's Stadium at the Point."

City Council has been looking for a company to buy naming rights for the stadium since at least last year, when it began seeking proposals from local companies. This one will see Sargent's paying $15,000 a year for five years for the rights.

Sargent's provides transcription and court reporting services, including to the council itself, with offices in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Kentucky.

It's not clear yet how soon the signs and the name will officially change, but after the 5-1 vote Wednesday night there is very little work left to do before the contract is inked, Mayor Frank Janakovic said. Councilman Jack Williams was absent for medical reasons.

Councilwoman Charlene Stanton voted no on the resolution, citing a concern about other businesses being able to advertise. A full copy of the contract was not yet available to the public.

Wednesday's meeting was one of the quickest and most pleasant meetings the council has held for months, with almost no bickering to be heard. In fact, council seemed to make progress on a number of issues brought up early on because people watching the meeting on television texted councilmembers with possible solutions.

At the beginning of the meeting, police Chief Bob Johnson introduced council to four new officers who were recently hired. One of the officers was featured last November in a 6 News story about school resource officers.
