Pittsburgh (WPXI) — Two dive teams are in Pittsburgh this week as authorities continue to look through cars they found in the waters of the Allegheny River.
Investigators say they found and identified one body over the weekend and now they're looking for two more people who have been missing in the area.
Divers have located more than 100 cars, so far, in the river and our NBC Affiliate WPXI got an exclusive, first-hand look at how the search is going.
Adventures with Purpose and Chaos divers found one body Saturday in the Allegheny River, later identified as 54-year-old Todd Diminno, but the search isn't over.
“On Friday, we discovered over 100 vehicles here underwater. They don't know how that many cars ended up here, but they have their suspicions.”
Now, authorities are going through each one, looking for leads in numerous crimes and missing persons cases.
“With VIN numbers, license plates, make and model identifiers and so forth, we'll process that with Pittsburgh PD, cold case detectives, homicide detectives and so forth to make sure we know exactly what it is that we're dealing with.”
The divers originally came to Pittsburgh to look for missing person Janet Walsh, from Shaler, and Bunnie Lee, who's been missing from Homewood since 2013.
“That's our purpose is to find those answers, to find the mysteries that lurk beneath the surfaces of our nations waters.”
The dive teams say they will be going through each car and they expect police will have a lot to follow up on in the coming weeks.
